From the Classroom to the Commons: MP Inspires Next Generation

It wasn’t an ordinary end to the term for pupils and staff at Leigh Academy Rainham. On Friday 18th October pupils and staff were delighted to welcome MP Naushabah Khan to the academy. It was Naushabah’s, the Member of Parliament for Rainham and Gillingham, first visit to Leigh Academy Rainham, part of Leigh Academies Trust, which opened in September 2021.

During the visit, the MP engaged in a lively and informative discussion with the pupils about her career in politics. She shared her personal journey, discussing her motivations for entering public service, the challenges she has faced, and the rewards of her role. The pupils were particularly interested in learning about the MP’s experiences in becoming a member of Parliament. The pupils also had a chance to feedback on ideas to improve their local area and really valued having their ideas listened to.

Naushabah was impressed by the enthusiasm and engagement of the pupils, who asked thoughtful and insightful questions – so many that they ran out of time! The discussion covered a wide range of topics and Naushabah emphasised the value of young people’s voices and encouraged the pupils to become involved in their communities and the democratic process.

Following the discussion, the MP toured the school facilities and had the opportunity to observe lessons in progress being impressed by the quality of teaching and learning, as well as the positive and inclusive atmosphere of the academy – especially the last lesson on the last day of term!

The MP concluded her visit by thanking the school for the warm welcome and expressing her admiration for the students’ intelligence and curiosity.
