Students across six of our secondary academies received their IB results this week. These were at The Leigh UTC, Wilmington Academy, Sir Geoffrey Leigh Academy, Leigh Academy Halley, Leigh Academy Blackheath and Strood Academy. You can find a report from each academy underneath.
This year we had 785 entries for IB diplomas (up from 351 entries in 2024) as part of both the IB Diploma Programme (DP) and IB Careers-related Programme (CP). Leigh Academy Blackheath received its first ever set of post-16 results as part of both the CP and DP, the only academy in the Trust to currently offer both programmes.
The average point score (APS) achieved this year prior to any remarks being submitted is 30.0, up from a final figure of 28.5 last year. This is equivalent to an H4 grade on average. Across Leigh Academies Trust (LAT), students achieved an average value added score of +0.24 in IB diplomas which means that our students have achieved considerably better than similar students nationally. What is most pleasing is that all six LAT academies receiving IB diplomas achieved a positive value added score overall for these programmes, demonstrating the positive impact they are having for our students.
Attainment was highest at Sir Geoffrey Leigh Academy where the average APS was 33.6 (equivalent to a grade H4+). The highest value added score was at Leigh Academy Halley where students achieved +0.45 on average, much higher than similar students nationally.
Spurred on by this success, more of our academies will be introducing post-16 IB programmes in September. The IBCP will be rolled out at Leigh Academy Tonbridge, Leigh Academy Minster and Leigh Academy Ebbsfleet. At the same time, Sir Geoffrey Leigh Academy will become only the second LAT academy to offer both IB programmes in the sixth form when it introduces the IBDP from the start of next academic year. Further ahead, Leigh Academy Rainham and Leigh Academy Bexley will launch the IBCP in September 2026.
On the back of this year’s results, many of our students will already be able to confirm their next steps, including places at university and degree apprenticeships. We look forward now to August when our remaining post-16 grades will be received in A Levels and applied general study programmes.
Simon Beamish, Chief Executive
Leigh Academy Blackheath
There is an overwhelming sense of pride at Leigh Academy Blackheath this week as our community celebrates the achievements of its inaugural cohort of LAB16 students and their excellent set of IB exam results. Students studying both the IB Diploma (DP) and Careers Related (CP) Programmes received their full awards yesterday, along with over 192,000 other students across 152 countries globally.
Overall, our students did better than their starting points suggested they would with a value added measure for this cohort reaching 0.21. With 89% of grades at 4 or above, and outcomes for the core assessments expecting to meet or exceed the IB global averages, these results are incredibly strong for our first set of post 16 students.
Mrs Smith, Principal of Leigh Academy Blackheath, commented:
“I am so happy for our amazing LAB16 students, they have taken this opportunity to study the IB and achieved outcomes that have the potential to be life changing. The average total UCAS point score for a LAB16 IBDP student equals that of an A-Level student achieving 3 ‘grade A’s’, which is really impressive!
For some students, these results are the end of their 7 year journey at LAB, having joined us as founding students in 2018. They leave us ready and determined to leave their footprint on the world, and I am truly very excited to see what they achieve.”
DP students can achieve a total of 45 points. Huge recognition must go to the following students who achieved exceptional overall results:
- Anna – 42
- Suchay – 39
- Alex – 37
- Adrianna – 36
- Kristien – 35
Rory and Christina, both CP students, also secured exceptional results with 5’s in both of their IB courses and a grade A for their Reflective Project. Like other CP students they now have a few weeks to wait for the results of their BTEC courses, but are pleased to know they are another step closer to the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.
Students did particularly well in English, maths, global politics and chemistry, and all elements of the IB core in both the DP and CP.
We wish all of our students the very best of luck for their next adventure, and share with you a few of the courses they are now going on to study:
- Anna – Chemistry with International study at University of Manchester
- Suchay – Physics at University College London
- Kristien – Politics and international studies at University of Warwick
- Rhianna – Criminology and Spanish at University of Liverpool
A mixture of other courses include: Global design engineering and the Institute of Engineering and Design, London, chemistry at University of Bath, architecture at Ravensbourne University, biomedical sciences at University of Surrey, psychology at University of Essex.
We wish all of our year 13 students every success for the future, and congratulate them on achieving their brilliant IB results this summer. Well done class of 2025!
