On Monday 8th January, a contingent from Hartley Primary Academy’s Year 6 took part in a ‘Solutions for the Planet’ challenge at Longfield Academy. The aim of the day was to develop creative and leadership skills in finding a solution to major sustainability problems involving energy, water or waste.
‘Solutions for the Planet’ bring together businesses and schools to design solutions to major social, environmental and economic challenges.
Our children worked alongside groups of Year 7 and Year 8 students as well as Year 6 children from other primary schools.
The solutions focussed on using STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) principles and had to be ‘achievable’, ‘beneficial’ and ‘clever and creative’.
Each team was asked to present its solution to the other delegates.
The ideas put forward were assessed based on whether they were innovative and how new or existing technology could be applied to achieve the end goal. Mr Dutton supervised the day and commented on the professionalism and enthusiasm demonstrated by our delegation.
