On Friday 5th May The Leigh Academy’s year 10 football team played Northfleet Technology College in the final of the Dartford and Gravesend cup. This is the first time that the current year 10 team have made it to a football cup final and the excitement was evident. They did so this time by winning all of their five group games and a difficult semi final fixtures vs Thamesview.
The final itself began well when Mineh Orogun (Brunel) opened the scoring after 20 minutes and The Leigh Academy took a 1-0 lead into half-time. NTC came out with intent in the second half and 10 minutes in, they equalised to make the score 1-1.
The final stages of normal time were tense and both teams came close to scoring a winning goal. The tie then went into extra time and after 3 minutes, Mineh Orogun calmly finished a chance from the edge of the 18 yard box to make the score 2-1. NTC came close to equalising for a second time, before Aaron Sanderson (Da Vinci) broke away and finished nicely to make the score 3-1. The Leigh Academy then played the game out to win 3-1 and collect the winner’s trophy.
Congratulations to the team!
